About Jiang Taigong & the Meaning Behind the Figurine
The fisherman figurine represents Jiang Taigong, also known as Grand Duke Jiang, an important historical and legendary figure in ancient China.
According to tradition, after retiring from public life, Jiang Taigong would often fish by the river in a highly unusual way: his fishing rod was short, his fishing line measured only three feet, his hook was straight rather than curved, and he used no bait at all. People laughed at him and questioned his methods, but he calmly replied:
“Only those who are willing will take the bait.”
Later generations turned this story into the well-known Chinese saying:
“Jiang Taigong fishes — only the willing take the bait.”
The expression is often used to describe situations in which people knowingly and willingly choose their path or involvement. More broadly, the story also reflects patience, confidence, individuality, and quiet wisdom.
Jiang Taigong’s unconventional fishing method ultimately attracted the attention of King Wen of Zhou, a ruler searching for talented advisors. Recognizing his intelligence and character, the king entrusted him with an important role in government and military strategy.
Today, the story is remembered not simply as a fishing tale, but as a symbol of:
* Remaining true to one’s principles
* Confidence without arrogance
* Patience and readiness for opportunity
* Quiet wisdom and self-belief
