About Chick Charms® Chocolate Kiss™
Chick Charms® Chocolate Kiss™ is a patented hybrid succulent (USPP#34,987) renowned for its unique chocolate-brown foliage and compact growth habit. This Sempervivum hybrid forms perfect 3-4 inch symmetrical rosettes with spoon-shaped leaves that develop rich mahogany tones under full sun exposure. Unlike typical Sempervivums, this cultivar maintains its warm cocoa coloration throughout the seasons, intensifying to near-black in winter. Mature plants produce pink star-shaped flowers on short stalks in early summer. Its exceptional cold tolerance and consistent coloring make it ideal for outdoor succulent gardens and container arrangements.
How to Care for Chick Charms® Chocolate Kiss™
Light: Thrives in full sun (6+ hours daily) for optimal coloration. In USDA zones 8-11, afternoon shade is recommended during extreme summer heat. Insufficient light causes fading to olive green.
Water: Water when soil is completely dry (typically every 7-10 days in summer). Reduce to every 3-4 weeks in winter. Avoid overhead watering to prevent crown rot.
Temperature: Extremely cold hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -30°F (-34°C) when established. Prefers 60-75°F (15-24°C) for active growth.
Soil & Potting: Requires gritty mix (60% pumice/perlite) in shallow containers. Terracotta or concrete pots enhance drainage. Repot every 2-3 years to refresh soil.
Fertilizer: Apply balanced liquid fertilizer (5-5-5) at 1/4 strength monthly during spring/summer.
Pests & Disease: Highly resistant to pests. Watch for occasional aphids - treat with water spray.
Propagation: Propagates easily through offsets. Separate chicks from mother plant in spring, allow 1-2 days to callus, then plant in dry mix. Roots establish within 2-3 weeks.
