About Crassula platyphylla f. variegata

Native to the sun-drenched landscapes of South Africa, this rare variegated form transforms the classic "Calico Kitten" crassula into a living kaleidoscope. Unlike its solid-green relatives, each leaf becomes a miniature canvas of nature’s artistry. Forms delicate, upright stems densely stacked with tiny, overlapping leaves. Mature plants develop a charming trailing or cascading form. Plump, rounded leaves (0.2–0.4" wide) display irregular cream, mint-green, and soft pink stripes, edged with a fine crimson line when sun-kissed. Variegation patterns are uniquely random—no two plants are identical. In late winter/spring, mature stems may produce clusters of tiny, star-shaped white or pale pink blooms, adding subtle elegance.

How to care for Crassula platyphylla f. variegata

Light: Crassula platyphylla f. variegata enjoys bright, indirect light or morning sun. Gentle sunlight enhances its pink edging, but intense afternoon rays can scorch its delicate leaves. East-facing windows or shaded patios are ideal.

Watering: Water moderately only when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring excess drains completely. Its thin leaves are less drought-tolerant than other succulents—avoid prolonged dryness. Reduce watering in winter during cooler temperatures.

Temperature & Seasonal Response: Ideal Range: 60–75°F (15–24°C). Below 50°F (10°C), leaf margins may deepen to ruby-red. Protect from frost. Above 85°F (30°C), provide shade and airflow to prevent stress.

Soil & Potting: A shallow, wide pot with drainage complements its spreading habit. Use airy soil (e.g., 60% cactus mix + 40% perlite/pumice). Terracotta pots help regulate moisture.

Fertilizing: Feed monthly in spring/summer with half-strength balanced fertilizer (e.g., 5-5-5). Withhold fertilizer in autumn/winter to respect its rest period.
Pest: Watch for mealybugs in leaf crevices. A dab of 70% isopropyl alcohol or neem oil treats minor infestations. Avoid over humidity to deter fungal issues.

Propagation: Stem cuttings root most reliably. Snip a 2–3" stem, let it callous for 1–2 days, then plant in dry gritty mix. Note: Variegation may not fully transfer to propagations.

Winter shipping

We insist on shipping succulents to our customers all year round.
