About Kalanchoe thyrsiflora

Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, commonly known as Flapjack Plant or Paddle Plant, is a striking rosette-forming succulent prized for its bold, architectural foliage. Native to the rocky ridges and grasslands of southern Africa, it develops large, rounded, paddle-shaped leaves stacked upright in a dense basal rosette. The leaves are typically grey-green and coated with a fine white powder called farina, with margins that blush a vivid red when exposed to strong sunlight. This powdery coating acts as a natural sun protectant and should not be wiped off.

Mature plants may eventually produce a tall flower spike bearing clusters of small, tubular, greenish-yellow blooms with a sweet fragrance. Note that the main rosette typically dies after flowering, but it is usually replaced by offsets that emerge from the base. With its sculptural form, seasonal color shift, and forgiving nature, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is an excellent choice for both new growers and seasoned collectors.

How to care for Kalanchoe thyrsiflora

Sun and Location: Flapjack performs best in bright light. Indoors, place it in a south- or east-facing window where it can receive at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Strong light is essential for maintaining the compact rosette shape and intensifying the red leaf margins. Insufficient light leads to stretched, pale, or floppy growth. Outdoors, provide more sun light in cooler climates, but in regions with intense summer heat, protect it from the harshest afternoon sun to prevent scorching. Good airflow is also beneficial.

Soil and Pot: Use a very gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with coarse sand, perlite, or pumice. Standard potting soil retains too much moisture and quickly leads to root rot. Choose a pot with drainage holes, and never let the pot sit in standing water. A heavier, wider container helps stabilize the tall rosette as it grows.

Watering: This is a drought-tolerant succulent that stores water in its thick leaves. Overwatering is the primary cause of failure. Allow the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain away. During the active growing season, this may mean watering every 7 to 14 days depending on light, heat, and pot size. Reduce watering significantly in winter, when growth slows. Water only enough to prevent the leaves from shriveling, perhaps once every 3 to 4 weeks or less. Always check the soil moisture with a finger or wooden skewer before watering again.

Propagating: Propagate easily by separating offsets that develop around the base of the mother plant. Gently detach a pup that has its own roots and plant it in a small pot with fresh, gritty mix. Keep the new plant in bright, indirect light and water sparingly until it establishes. Some plants sold as Kalanchoe thyrsiflora in the trade may actually be the closely related Kalanchoe luciae, which is less reliable from leaf cuttings, so division of offsets is the most dependable method. Be cautious when handling the leaves, as the powdery farina is easily rubbed off and does not regenerate quickly.
