About Hildewintera colademononis (Monkey Tail Cactus)
Hildewintera colademononis, commonly known as Monkey Tail Cactus, is a distinctive epilithic cactus species native to Bolivian mountainous regions. This specimen is characterized by its pendulous growth habit, with mature stems reaching 2-3 meters in length and exhibiting a dense covering of soft, white spines resembling primate fur. The cylindrical stems display a vibrant green coloration that transitions to golden hues under intense illumination. During spring maturation, the plant produces large, day-blooming flowers in brilliant magenta-red tones, followed by small spherical fruits. Its unique morphology and spectacular floral displays render it particularly valuable for hanging basket cultivation and conservatory collections.
How to Care for Hildewintera colademononis
Light: Full spectrum illumination proves essential for optimal growth, with a minimum of 5-6 hours of direct sunlight required daily. Partial afternoon shade prevents epidermal damage in regions experiencing temperatures exceeding 85°F (29°C).
Water: The watering regimen should follow a strict dry-down cycle, with thorough irrigation administered only when the substrate has completely dried. During winter dormancy, moisture should be withheld entirely to simulate natural arid conditions.
Temperature: This species demonstrates optimal performance within a 70-90°F (21-32°C) range during active growth periods. Brief exposure to 40°F (4°C) is tolerated when the plant remains completely dry, though prolonged freezing conditions prove detrimental.
Soil & Potting: A mineral-dominant substrate comprising 70% pumice or perlite ensures proper drainage and aeration. Suspended planters with depth proportional to stem length accommodate the pendulous growth habit most effectively.
Fertilizer: Monthly applications of low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer at 25% strength during the growing season support flowering potential without promoting excessive vegetative growth.
Pests & Disease: While relatively pest-resistant, root mealybugs may occasionally infest the root zone. Systemic insecticide applications provide effective control when applied preventatively during repotting procedures.
Propagation: Stem cuttings measuring 15-20cm in length yield the highest propagation success rates. These should be callused for 10-14 days under dry conditions before being planted in sterile, mineral-based medium.

Winter shipping
We insist on shipping succulents to our customers all year round. However due to the extreme winter weather, although we pack succulents with as much protective material as possible, plants are still at increased risk of frost on their way to colder areas. We highly recommend adding one 72-hour heat pack to your order or you can request a hold on the package until it warms up.
Please note that The Next Gardener is not responsible for packages that suffer cold damage without a heat pack. We cannot control the weather. Order at your own risk.
