String of Bananas / Senecio Radicans (4 inch)
About String of Bananas / Senecio Radicans (4 inch)
String of Bananas, a close relative to the viral String of Pearls, features smooth, banana-shaped leaves tightly clustered along its stems. The stems are slender and typically trail over the soil. String of Bananas is favored for its simple care requirements and attractive foliage, making it an excellent choice for indoor or outdoor hanging decorations.
Here is another Othonna capensis that is very similar to the String of Bananas, but the stems of the Othonna capensis are generally purple, and the whole plant turns purple in full sun.
How to care for a String of Bananas / Senecio Radicans (4 inch)
Sunlight: Bright, indirect sunlight enhances the health of the String of Bananas. It should receive 5-6 hours of bright indirect or direct sunlight daily. Please protect it from intense direct sunlight during summer to prevent leaf damage. If indoors, move it to a shaded area during peak sunlight hours or provide shading on windowsills or balconies when necessary.
Temperature: String of Bananas thrives in temperatures between 60-80°F. Extreme temperatures can adversely affect health, so it must be protected from hot and cold extremes. Consider placing it under air conditioning or in a cooler, well-ventilated spot during summer. In winter, ensure it's shielded from freezing temperatures by bringing it indoors to a warmer location.
Soil/Pot: As a succulent, String of Bananas benefits from well-draining soil like a mix of succulent/cactus soil or a DIY blend consisting of 2 parts organic soil (such as peat soil) and 1 part perlite or pumice. Ensure the soil is well-aerated and drains effectively. Using a planter with drainage holes can prevent waterlogging. Choose appropriately sized hanging pots, as String of Bananas is ideal for hanging displays.
Watering: The string of Bananas is a drought-tolerant plant. Watering can be done using the dry and watering method. You can check for dryness by inserting a stick into the soil and checking the soil on the stick to see if it is dry or wet. Insert the stick through the edge of the pot to avoid damaging the roots.
Propagation: Similar to String of Pearls, String of Bananas propagates easily. Select a healthy, mature plant with several branches for propagation in spring or autumn.
1. Use sterilized sharp scissors to cut several 4-5 inch cuttings from the plant.
2. Remove the two to three sets of leaves from the bottom.
3. Let the cuttings dry in a cool, ventilated area for 2-3 days until the wounds are callous.
4. After planting the cuttings in a well-draining potting mix, ensure the bare stem portion of the cutting is buried in the soil.
5. Then, place the cuttings in a bright spot with indirect light.
6. Don't water immediately; use a spray bottle to moisten the soil when it dries out lightly.
7. Gradually increase light exposure and resume regular watering after about a month once roots have established.
