How to care for Cotyledon Orbiculata cv. long Leaf Variegated

Sun/Location: Cotyledon Orbiculata cv.long Leaf Variegated prefers a sunny, warm, and dry environment. It can tolerate drought but not heat or cold. In summer, the plant should be protected from sun and rain, as heat and high humidity can cause leaf drop and root rot. Click here to learn how humidity affects succulents.

Soil/Pot: To ensure optimal growth of Cotyledon Orbiculata cv. long Leaf Variegated during its growth seasons (spring and fall), avoiding the plant sitting in the waterlogging soil mix is essential. Because this plant is more sensitive to high humidity and easily dies from being overwatered. DIY a well-draining cactus soil mix can get finished by mixing pumice, perlite, or grit into the regular potting soil.

Watering/Temperature: The Soak and dry watering method can work for this succulent variety. However, Cotyledon Orbiculata cv. long Leaf Variegated is relatively hard to survive in summer when the temperatures exceed 95°F. In cold winter, move the plant indoors and locate it in a bright location, then stop watering when the temperature goes down to 41°F.

Propagation: Like other Cotyledon family succulents, the best and fast method to propagate Cotyledon Orbiculata cv. long Leaf Variegated is stem clippings. Use clean and sharp garden scissors to cut off at least a 2-3 inch clipping from the mother Cotyledon, and let the cut wound heal over 2 or 3 days before replanting the succulent cutting into a new planter pot.

Please note that The Next Gardener is not responsible for packages that suffer cold damage without a heat pack. We cannot control the weather. Order at your own risk.

A beautiful and unusual succulent

The Cotyledon Orbiculata cv.long Leaf Variegated is a great addition to my succulent family. I have succulent shelving built into my bathroom--grow lights w/all cords hidden where I create a mix of statues, art objects, and beautiful succulents.

The Cotyledon Orbiculata really doesn't look like any other succulent I've ever seen. The color mix of a red outline on leaves that are farina covered blue-green and yellow is striking. The farina is streaky so that the colors look like they've been water-colored on. The long shape of the leaves is also unusual.

The plant that arrive was *larger* than advertised! (How often do you read that in a review?). And it is heavy because those leaves are so plump. Mine was leaning slightly to one side and I wrote to Next Gardner to ask about whether using an 8 inch plastic trellis would damage the leaves. They assured me that it would be fine and suggested that maybe the plant had stretched out a little because of how it had been facing its lights.

But when I repotted it in a deeper pot, it hardly needed support at all, though I have used the trellis for now. Looking at it more closely, it definitely hasn't stretched out. It's just a bit top heavy. I've got it near a grow light and in the few days I've had it, it seems already to have grown. Certainly the colors, if anything, seem more vibrant.

I've never seen one of these beauties before and it says they are rare. My recommendation: buy one now!! You will be so pleased with it!!
